Captain America's Shield - Granny Square #1

Here's the first granny square in a series I will begin for my son. Day by day I will work on a new one as I sit with at the NICU.

Today we begin with Captain America's Shield!


Blue, red, white and grey 8ply yarn, 4.00mm hook

Work in rounds

In blue...
Ch2
1. 12 dc into second chain from hook 
(12) sl st to join
In red ch1 to join...
2. dc inc x 12 (24) sl st to join
In white ch1 to join...
3. (dc inc, dc) x12 (36) sl st to join
In red ch1 to join...
4. (dc inc, 2 dc) x12 (48) sl st to join
In grey ch1 to join...
5. dc 3 inc (3in1), hdc, 8 sc (hdc, dc inc, ch 1, dc inc, hdc, 8sc)x3. hdc, dc (56). sl st to join.
6. dc, ((2dc, ch, 2dc) in next stitch, 13 dc, )x3, (2dc, ch, 2dc) in next stitch, 12 dc (64) sl st to join.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Star applique

In white...
Ch2
Start in 2nd chain from hook
(Dc, 2 sl st, back to the centre)x5
Ch to finish. Leave long thread for sewing to the square.


If you want a little more definition on the finished piece
In blue...
Make an extra round of sc working through top to bottom between the red and blue circles (12 sc)
