Crochet Newborn Vest

As my wee boy started chubbing up I had to make new clothes to keep up. This design is inspired by my dread of putting things over baby's heads 😂 that's why this one is fastened at the sides, with heaps of space for baby's head!

Here goes...

Crochet baby vest - new born with buttons

3.5mm hook, I used loyal wool 8ply (dk), 1.5cm buttons.

1. - 4. 24 Foundation hdc (24) ch 2 turn.
5. - 24. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
Change to contrast colour 
25. - 26. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
Change to main colour
27. - 28. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
Change to contrast colour 
29. - 30. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
Change to main colour
31. - 32. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
33. - 34 (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x12 (24) ch2 turn
35a. - 47a. (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x2 (4) ch2 turn
Leave long tail, will start from this point again at row 48.

Start 35 b from the 24th stitch of row 34, working in towards the 20th stitch.

35b. - 47b. (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x2 (4) ch2 turn 
Ch to finish.

Rejoin and start from end of row 47a.

48. 4hdc, 16 foundation hdc, 4hdc into row 47b (24) ch 2 turn
49. - 50. (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x12 (24) ch2 turn
51. - 58. 24 hdc (24) ch2 turn
Chain 13
59. Start in second chain from hook and work row back. 12 hdc in the chains, 24 hdc, 12 foundation hdc, (48) ch2 turn
60. 48 hdc (48) ch2 turn
61. Hdc, ch 2, skip 2 hdc for button hole, 42 hdc, ch 2 skip 2 hdc for button hole, hdc (48) ch2 turn
62. 48 hdc (48) ch2 turn (works out as 3hdc in first button hole, 2hdc in second)
63. - 69. 48 hdc (48) ch2 turn
70. Hdc, ch 2, skip 2 hdc for button hole, 42 hdc, ch 2 skip 2 hdc for button hole, hdc (48) ch2 turn
71. 48 hdc (48) ch2 turn (works out as 3hdc in first button hole, 2hdc in second)
72. - 78. 48 hdc (48) ch2 turn
79. Hdc, ch 2, skip 2 hdc for button hole, 42 hdc, ch 2 skip 2 hdc for button hole, hdc (48) ch2 turn
80. 3 dc in button hole, back loop dc, (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x20, front loop dc, 2 dc, back loop dc, (48) ch2 turn (works out as 3 regular dc in first button hole, 2 regular dc in second)
81. - 82. (Front loop dc, back loop dc)x24 (48) ch2 turn
Finish off.

Weave in loose ends.

Sew on buttons to front in places equivalent to the button holes.

Voila!
