Work in rounds

In light grey...
Ch2
1. 12 dc into second chain from hook 
(12) sl st to join ch 1
2. dc inc x 6, in grey...dc inc x 2, in light grey... dc inc x4 (24) sl st to join
3. (dc inc, dc) x2, dc inc, in grey... dc, (dc inc, dc) x8 dc inc, in light grey, dc (36) sl st to join ch 1
In black ch1 to join...
4. (dc inc, 2 dc) x12 (48) sl st to join ch 1
In white ch1 to join...
5. dc inc,hdc, 8 sc (hdc, dc inc, ch 1, dc inc, hdc, 8sc)x3. hdc, dc inc (56). sl st to join ch 1
6. (13 dc, (2dc, ch, 2dc) in next stitch)x4  (64) sl st to join.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Sl st through the top and bottom of the work with black yarn between the light white and grey rounds to add definition.

In red...
Stitch two eyes using doubled thread.

Stitch around the red with black yarn to complete eyes and use black to create mouth line.

We are poison to you Spider-Man, that's why we call us Venom!

I suppose it would be common for other toddlers to have a superhero obsession similar to my own two-year-old son. One of his favourite activities is picking a super hero and a super villain, assigning one of each of those roles to himself and a parent, enforcing dress up, and enacting an elaborate play fight based on the characters. I prefer to help out with the dress up part by making these costumes rather than buying them; the amount of superheroes and villains he chooses between would render me bankrupt if I made them all available! So soon enough, Venom was the project on my agenda and the main part was the beanie/mask. It was a "make it up as you go along" crochet project and so I wrote it down as I went along. Both my son and myself were happy with the final product.
