Red, white, brown, light grey, purple, yellow, black and grey 8ply yarn, 4.00mm hook

Work in rounds

In yellow...
Ch2
1. 12 dc into second chain from hook 
(12) sl st to join ch 1
2. dc inc x 5, in light grey... dc inc x1, in grey...dc inc x 2, in light grey dc inc x1, in yellow... dc inc x3 (24) sl st to join
3. (dc inc, dc) x2, dc inc, in grey... dc, (dc inc, dc) x8 in yellow... dc inc dc (36) sl st to join ch 1
In purple ch1 to join...
4. (dc inc, 2 dc) x12 (48) sl st to join ch 1
In white ch1 to join...
5. 8 sc (hdc, dc inc, ch 1, dc inc, hdc, 8sc)x3. hdc, dc inc, ch 1, dc inc, hdc (56). sl st to join ch 1
6. 11 dc, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in next stitch (13 dc, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in next stitch)x3 2 dc (64) sl st to join.

Finish off. Weave in ends.



Eyes (make 2)

In red...

4sc in magic ring, sl st to join.

Leave long thread for sewing.



Eyebrow part of mask

In dark grey...
ch 24

Leave long thread for sewing.


Breathing apparatus centre piece

In light grey... 

Working in rows.

Ch 5, start in 2nd chain from hook.
1. - 6. 4 sc, ch and turn
7. sl st, 2 hdc, sl st
Finish off.

Leave long thread for sewing.


Sides of breathing apparatus (make 2)

In dark grey... 

Ch 7, turn and start in second chain from hook, sc 6

Finish off.

Leave long thread for sewing.
After sewing this on you can make markings on it with a single thread of dark grey. (See photos)


Hair

In brown...

Ch 6, turn and work in second chain from hook.

1.- 8. 4 sl st, ch 5, turn and work in second chain from hook.
9. 4 sl st
Finish off.

Leave long thread for sewing.


Pull appliques to shape when sewing to get the right shapes.

We are poison to you Spider-Man, that's why we call us Venom!

I suppose it would be common for other toddlers to have a superhero obsession similar to my own two-year-old son. One of his favourite activities is picking a super hero and a super villain, assigning one of each of those roles to himself and a parent, enforcing dress up, and enacting an elaborate play fight based on the characters. I prefer to help out with the dress up part by making these costumes rather than buying them; the amount of superheroes and villains he chooses between would render me bankrupt if I made them all available! So soon enough, Venom was the project on my agenda and the main part was the beanie/mask. It was a "make it up as you go along" crochet project and so I wrote it down as I went along. Both my son and myself were happy with the final product.
